As part of its clean and green initiative (CGI), Bharathidasan University will import a set of 350-400 metal dustbins from China for the Palkalaiperur campus. Vice-chancellor P Manisankar said that these trendy metal bins will ensure optimum usage.

The idea is to encourage use of dustbins to keep the university premises clean. A separate committee has been formed by the vice-chancellor and V Rajesh Kannan of the micro biology department as coordinator to spearhead the clean and green initiative. “Studies have proven that better quality and catchy dustbins influence its effective usage,” said Rajesh. “We could not find optimum usage of dustbins even in places where there are adequate bins. This made us look for best practices across the world and we found metal bins from the Chinese city of Changsha matching our needs,” he said.

While the university is yet to arrive at a final cost, sources say that considerable investment may go into the project. Rajesh said that they had opted to import it from China because of the cost and quality factors. “Not only the Chinese bins were found better in quality than similar products in domestic market, it was also cost effective,” he said.

There will be two types of dustbins. Twin bins, which have separate chambers for organic and inorganic waste, would be installed in open space on sides of roads, gardens, canteen areas and parking lots. The bins which have three chambers will be installed indoors. Apart from organic and inorganic waste, the third chamber is meant to collect paper waste generated in the university.

The bins are planned to be installed by the end of this month, said vice-chancellor P Manisankar. The students, faculty members and non-teaching staffs have been educated through a series of awareness drives on the green initiative over the past few weeks. The university would be declared plastic-free zone by December, he said.
