2003-2009: Acting Career Breakthrough[edit]

Hyun Bin made a good impression on viewers in his first debut and appareance in the 2003 romance comedy drama series Bodyguard. He would later starred in the same year in MBC’s sitcom Nonstop 4 and the romance drama Ireland. He also made his film debut in 2004, with the sports movie Spin Kick.

In 2005, he achieved success overnight after appearing in the successful romantic comedy series My Name is Kim Sam-Soon, the drama series was a hit with audiences and critics, and it became a nationwide phenomenon, over the course of its run, it peaked with a 37% rating and for the finale it reached a 50.5%. His performance drew praise and won him the coveted Top Excellence Award at KBS Drama Awards, it was considered a breakthrough role for him, and his chemistry with co-star Kim Suh An was considered another aspect that led to the success of the drama.



After starring in the highly successful My Name is Kim Sam-Soon he followed it up by accepting the leading role in the romantic melodrama A Millionaire’s First Love, the film was a huge success among audiences, critics gave praises to Hyun Bin’s performance and his chemistry with co-star Lee Yeon Hee.

In 2006, he made his small screen comeback in KBS2 The Snow Queen, the romantic melodrama failed to gain interest among audiences, even though his performance was unanimously praised. Two years later, in 2008, he took part in Noh Hee Kyung‘s scripted The World That They Live In, a role entirely different from what the public was accustomed to seeing him in, he portrayed in the romantic melodrama a drama director who falls in love with a fellow director who was portrayed by Song Hye Kyo. The drama series was a mild success, although both actor performances drew a lot of praise. In 2009, he received critical acclaim for his leading performance of turbulent psychopath Hang Dong Soo, in MBC’s Friend, Our Legend, a remake/tv adaptation of the 2001 hit film Friend.

2010-2013: Worldwide Popularity and Recognition[edit]

He gained not only recognition nationwide but also worldwide by taking the lead role in Kim Eun Sook‘s fantasy romance melodrama Secret Garden, the drama was a huge success with audiences and critics, and Hyun Bin won several awards for his performance in the drama series. In 2011, he appeared in two films, Lee Yoon Ki‘s minimalist breakup indie film Come Rain Come Shine and Kim Tae Yong‘s film Late Autumn, a co-production between South Korea, China, the United States and Hong Kong. Hyun Bin leading performances in both films were praised by critics. He spent almost the whole year of 2013 involved in several endorsement deals shooting commercial and visiting several Asian countries on a fan-meeting tour.

2014-2016: Military Service and Acting Comeback[edit]

In 2014, after spending almost an entire year fulfilling his mandatory military service Hyun Bin choose to appear in the historical period film The Fatal Encounter, the film was a success at the box office, even if Hyun Bin’s acting was criticized by critics, specifically his tone-deaf enunciation and stiff performance were focal points of criticism by critics.

In 2015, he made his small screen debut comeback in SBS’ Hyde, Jekyll, Me, the romantic comedy-drama series achieved extremely low ratings making it a complete flop. A year later, in 2016, he set his own personal management agency, VAST Entertainment.

2017-: Career Resurgence[edit]

In 2017, he appeared in Kim Sung Hoon‘s action thriller film Confidential Assignment, the film was a hit with audiences and Hyun Bin’s performance and comedic performance with co-star Yoo Hae Jin received a huge amount of praise. He then starred with Yoo Ji Tae in the crime action film The Swindlers, the film was a success at the box office and once again Hyun Bin was praised for his performance by critics.

In 2018, Hyun Bin surprised critics and audiences alike by taking his first turn as a villain in the crime thriller The Negotiation, the film was a success and his performance was praised. He then starred in the zombie blockbuster film Rampant, Hyun Bin portrayed Lee Chung a hero who defends and protects the Joseon nation against zombies. He is currently set to appear alongside actress Park Shin Hye in tvN’s fantasy suspense drama Memories of the Alhambra.
