SURAT: A fresh cryptocurrency case was registered on Friday by CID crime against bitcoin accused Divyesh Darji and his partner Ranjit Saxena for their involvement in a scam suspected to be worth Rs1,000 crore. The complaint was filed by Girish Sheladiya, who lost Rs48 lakh after he invested in cryptocoins issued by the duo’s company Dekado. Darji, a resident of Surat, and Saxena, a resident of Mumbai, registered Dekado abroad and set up its Gujarat office at Piplod in the city. The company also launched its websites to lure people by promising 42 to 72 per cent return in a month to six months and referral bonus of 7 to 0.5 per cent on investment in cryptocoins of their company.

“When they launched cryptocoins, the rate was $1 and in a short span of time it shot up to $15. They used to pay regular interest to investors initially before suddenly closing the site in March 2018. The value of cryptocoin of Dekado today is Rs0.00000001 or $0.00003778. Darji is in judicial custody in a bitcoin case in another city while Saxena is on the run. An FIR has been registered against Darji in Bengalaru too for cryptocurrency fraud,” a police officer said.

Police have started recording statements of people in the fresh case. Police said Sheladiya had invested Rs48 lakh whereas another five people around Rs75 lakh in cryptocoins of Dekado.

A CID crime officer said, “This scam could be over Rs1,000 crore in the world, including Rs1,00 crore in the country alone. We would approach the court and seek Darji’s remand once our paperwork gets over.”

CID crime branch has asked people to contact police inspector PG Narwade if they had been cheated by the duo’s company.
