Recently we reported about an attack on Outlook which allowed the hackers to access emails and metadata. Now multiple victims are reporting that hackers managed to gain access to their crypto wallets and stole cryptocurrencies. This might explain the motive of the attack.

According to Motherboard, hackers managed to gain access to a Microsoft customer support staffer’s login credentials allowing them to take control of non-corporate Outlook, MSN, and Hotmail accounts.

The hackers also had access to my inbox allowing them to password reset my Kraken.com account and withdrawal [sic] my Bitcoin. I think Microsoft talks about this way to lightly [sic] about this leak and I think there are a lot of users who have suffered damage in one way or another as there is a lot of sensitive information in an inbox. I am planning to at least file a police report and thinking about holding Microsoft liable for the financial damage and the fact that a lot of my personal information may get leaked in the near future.

– Jevon Ritmeester (victim of the attack)

Apparently, hackers managed to gain access to Kraken which is a popular cryptocurrency exchange. Hackers managed to steal 1 Bitcoin valued at $5,000 from Jevon Ritmeester. At this point, it’s unclear if Microsoft knows about the crypto heist. However, holding Microsoft responsible for the stolen cryptocurrency might be an exaggeration as users should always use 2-factor authentication to protect their accounts.
