Dehradun: The main accused in the murder case of Abdul Shakoor, the mastermind behind the infamous Rs 485 crore Bitcoin scam, was arrested in the Prem Nagar area of Dehradun on Tuesday.
The accused Mohammad Aashiq, as Malappuram (Kerala) resident, had come to Dehradun to surrender before the court. Earlier on August 30, the Dehradun police had arrested five persons, who were also allegedly involved in the murder.
Aashiq told the police that he left his education midway and came in contact with Shakoor who owned two firms – BTC BITZ COIN SHUKKOR and BITZEX. Aashiq claimed that he reaped good profits by investing in Bitcoin initially and he invested around Rs 13 crore in Shakoor’s bitcoin company. However, Shakoor’s firm soon started running in losses and Aashiq hatched a conspiracy to get the information about the passwords from him. Shakoor suffered serious injuries while being tortured for information by Aashiq and others and died on August 28. Subsequently, Aashiq and his accomplices left the body in a private hospital and escaped.
He further added that following the police raids at Kerala, he had come to Dehradun with the intention of surrendering before the court but was caught before he could do so.
Shakoor had allegedly collected around Rs 450 crore for investing in crypto-currency from the residents of Manjeri, Pandikakad and Malappuram in Kerala, with the help of his core team members and their respective sub-teams. Police said that animosity among the team members started when Shakoor allegedly suffered losses in the Bitcoin business and he along with his core team members —Aashiq, Rehaab, Arshan and Muneef— escaped from Kerala sometime back.
Shakoor reportedly deceived his close associate Aashiq by claiming that his Bitcoin account has been hacked, and he is going to launch his own crypto-currency to pay back the investors’ money. Not convinced with Shakoor’s arguments, Aashiq along with his five close associates, all of whom were arrested by Dehradun police on August 30, hatched a plan to find the password of Shakoor’s Bitcoin account.
Aashiq and Shakoor reached Dehradun on August 12 and shifted in a rented house in Suddhowala in the Prem Nagar area on August 20. They were joined by Faris Mamnoon, Arvind C, Asif Ali, Sufail Mukhtar and Aftab Mohammad – all members of a sub team formed by Aashiq. The six thrashed Shakoor but were unsuccessful in getting the password of his Bitcoin account.
