15 dogs, 3 cats found tethered to stakes outside southeast Houston home

Fifteen dogs and three cats recently seized from a southeast Houston home were found tethered to stakes in the ground without access to adequate shelter or water. Officials believe the animals were left helpless for weeks on end during recent cold fronts and rainstorms.

Officials with the Harris County Animal Cruelty Task Force rescued the animals from a home located off Schley Street in the Pecan Park neighborhood after a neighbor reported the conditions of the animals. A majority of the animals were found in an uncovered, small fenced area on short tethers tied to stakes in the ground, and had very little room to roam around, according to Angelina Saucedo with the Houston Humane Society (HHS).

Most of the animals were infested with fleas and sores and needed immediate medical attention, Saucedo said.

The owner was not on site when the animals were seized and contact has not been made with him or her yet, Saucedo yet. The owner will be due in court next week. HHS is hopeful to obtain custody of the animals pending the court hearing, Saucedo said.

“Just by their conditions – some of the dogs had long nails and fleas – they seem to have been out there for a while, at least weeks we are thinking,” Saucedo said. “The main issue was lack of shelter and water.”

The animals are currently receiving medical care for their injuries and full medical evaluations, including spay and neutering services, booster shots and teeth cleaning. If HHS is granted custody, the animals could be available for adoption as early as the end of the month, Saucedo said.

“We have actually been getting tons of incoming calls regarding these animals,” Saucedo said. “They are really adorable, cute dogs (and) the cats are beautiful.”

Saucedo said HHS will alert the public when the animals are officially available for adoption.
