During that war, the government took temporary control of every facet of the economy essential to winning. Almost overnight, America’s factories were converted from making civilian goods to war materiel. Gasoline, tires and critical foodstuffs were rationed. Wages and prices were controlled. Inspired by FDR’s moral leadership and his ability to talk like a neighbor to the people, the entire nation got behind the effort to win the war.
