The Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) is issuing tokens. “We encourage people to buy smartcards but some don’t prefer it. If passengers insist then tokens are given and on return the tokens are sanitised,” stated a CMRL official.
BMRCL officers stated MoHUA has to take a call on tokens. “It’s not about sanitising tokens. Token sale (being of small value) will be against cash. Circulation of notes and coins at the counters may be a potential source of infection,” stated a BMRCL official.
“AFC gates designed in 2010 cannot hold more data. For each payment, information has to be sent and stored in all gates for recharge to happen as the card can be used at any gate. Once online or app-based payment is done, information will be available at all gates within an hour reflecting the revised details. That information will remain for the next seven days. Commuters who do not use Metro during that period are advised not to make payments,” a BMRCL official defined
