modi: PM Modi says cryptocurrencies should be used to strengthen democracy, not harm it
NEW DELHI: Noting that India would be happy to share its expertise in holding free and fair elections and improving transparency in all areas of governance through innovative digital solutions, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday insisted on the joint development of global standards for emerging technologies such as media and cryptocurrencies so that they are used to strengthen democracy, not undermine it.
In a virtual address to the Democracy Summit hosted by US President Joe Biden, Modi said India would be happy to share its expertise in holding free and fair elections.

* The prime minister called for united efforts to shape global standards for emerging technologies such as social media and cryptocurrencies to be used to “strengthen democracy, not undermine it.”
* “We must (…) jointly shape global standards for emerging technologies such as social media and cryptocurrencies so that they are used to strengthen democracy, not to undermine it,” Modi said during of a virtual summit organized by US President Joe Biden.
* It is estimated that there are between 15 and 20 million cryptocurrency investors in India, with a total of around 400 billion Indian rupees ($ 5.29 billion), according to industry estimates . The government does not provide any official data.
* The prime minister said the meeting provided a timely platform to strengthen cooperation between democracies.
* He said democratic countries must constantly improve their democratic systems and practices and strengthen inclusion, transparency, human dignity and decentralization of power.
* Prime Minister Modi said that different parts of the world have followed different paths of democratic development.
* Prime Minister Modi stressed that the democratic spirit is an integral part of the civilizational ethics of India and noted that centuries of colonial rule could not suppress the democratic spirit of the Indian people.
* “Elected republican city-states such as Licchavi, Shakya flourished in India 2,500 years ago. The same democratic spirit is found in the 10th century Uttaramerur inscription which codified the principles of democratic participation,” a- he declared.
